Green Arrow & The Canaries: Not Moving Forward at CW

The potential “Arrow” spinoff about the Canaries is officially dead at CW, Variety has learned.

Plans for the show were first announced in September 2019, six months after it was announced that “Arrow” would end after its eighth season. A backdoor pilot aired in January 2020 as part of “Arrow” Season 8, titled “Green Arrow & The Canaries.” The episode took place two decades after the end of the original show and starred Katherine McNamara as Mia Smoak, Katie Cassidy as Laurel Lance, and Juliana Harkavy as Dinah Drake.

Cassidy began with “Arrow” in the show’s pilot, though she was killed off in Season 4 before returning in Season 6. McNamara first joined “Arrow” in its seventh season. Harkavy had been with “Arrow” since Season 5 and has also appeared in multiple “Arrow”-verse shows.

Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Beth Schwartz, Marc Guggenheim, Jill Blankenship and Oscar Balderrama were all executive producers on the project, with Schwartz, Guggenheim, Blankenship and Balderrama co-writing the episode. Berlanti Productions produced in association with Warner Bros. Television.

But DC fans need not fret, as there are a number of new superhero shows currently in the works at CW. Among those are a “Wonder Girl” series and another based on the DC character Naomi. Blankenship is co-writing the “Naomi” project along with Ava DuVernay. The network is also prepping a “Black Lightning” spinoff built around the character “Painkiller,” which will get its own backdoor pilot during the fourth and final season of “Black Lightning.”

The CW has found great success with its superhero lineup, which currently includes “The Flash,” “Supergirl,” “Legends of Tomorrow,” “Batwoman” and the upcoming “Superman & Lois.

‘Arrow’ boss provides “frustrating” update on the ‘Green Arrow & the Canaries’ Spin-off

According to Digital Spy a decision about “Green Arrow & the Canaries” has been made. You can read the article here below.

The Arrowverse’s first show Arrow may have come to an end, but there is a spin-off called Green Arrow & the Canaries in the works. You might have seen that an Arrow episode from the final season earlier this year was essentially a backdoor pilot.

Now a few months have passed, you’d hope that there would be some progress towards bringing this spin-off to the screen, but unfortunately executive producer Marc Guggenheim isn’t able to share that much with fans.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy to promote Wizards: Tales of Arcadia, the TV boss said: “I know things, but it’s up to CW and Warner Bros to publicize the things I know.

“Actually, it’s a little frustrating because people are constantly tweeting at me and I would love to answer, but there are certain things I’m not allowed to talk about until the powers-that-be decide we can.

Speaking about the state of the Arrowverse in general, Guggenheim added: “I’ve finished with Arrow, I’ve finished with ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’. It feels like the end of a chapter for me.

“So I’m not entirely sure if there’s another chapter to be had at this moment in time. At some point, I need to figure out exactly what I’m doing with the Arrowverse going forward, but I haven’t quite figured that out yet… The Arrowverse shows are still going.

“Fortunately, I don’t think we have to worry about it ending anytime soon. I think when that day comes, if I’m still involved in the shows, I’m sure [my experience ending the Tales of Arcadia trilogy] will inform that one.”

“Green Arrow & The Canaries” Update

Though Arrow has ended, fans have been eagerly awaiting its spinoff Green Arrow and the Canaries. The show, set twenty years in the future, follows Oliver Queen’s daughter Mia (Katherine McNamara) as she takes up his mantle and fights alongside Black Siren (Katie Cassidy) and Black Canary (Juliana Harkavy).

The show has yet to be picked up to series, and with the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic shutting down film and television production, its future is hazy. During an interview with CBR, Cassidy had a simple answer when asked if the show had been picked up: “No!”
